KINDERGARTEN APPLICATION FOR 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR

Applying to Kindergarten is an exciting first step in your child’s elementary school journey. In NYC, children start kindergarten in the calendar year they turn five. For students born in 2020, entry to Kindergarten will begin in September 2025.

Beginning Tuesday, December 9, 2025 children born in 2021 can apply to Kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year.

The application deadline is Friday, January 23rd, 2026. All families who apply by the deadline will receive a Kindergarten offer beginning on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

All families should participate in Kindergarten admissions, including children currently attending Pre-K, students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and students with accessibility needs.

MySchools.nyc includes an online directory tool that allows families to explore program choices, save programs of interest and submit their application, all on the same site.

Important considerations

Placement:
You can apply to up to 12 schools, and you should list them in your true order of preference, as the system tries to match you with your highest-ranked choice first.
Waitlists:
If you are not matched with your first-choice school, you will automatically be added to the waitlist for your higher-ranked programs.
Documents:
You will need to provide proof of address for your application, but you do not need a Social Security number or proof of citizenship.
