Advisory Program

“When students feel safe and supported, they are truly ready and able to learn.”

Laura Weaver and Mark Wilding

We have created our own unique and special advisory program for P.S. 361Q students.  Our students meet with their advisor in a small group each Monday to learn more about 5 Core Competencies.  In a student advisory program, each student in the school is assigned a teacher or staff member who assists the student in achieving his or her academic and personal goals.

Advisory offers emotional support for students in two forms:

  • First, it supplies built-in peer groups for all students, including new students.

  • Second, it provides students with an adult who knows them well and who can offer advocacy and support in difficult social and academic situations.

5 Core SEL Competencies:

  • Self Awareness

  • Self-Management

  • Social Awareness

  • Relationship Skills

  • Responsible Decision-Making

Advisory Program Schedule:

  • Read Aloud with Accountable Talk

  • Books on Topics around Social-emotional Issues (self-awareness, resolving conflict, maintaining friendship, demonstrating empathy, etc.)

  • Books on Topics around Academic & Personal Behaviors (Persistence, engagement, collaboration, self-regulation, etc.)

  • Extended Group Discussion

  • Goal-setting

  • Conference & Follow-up

Zones of Regulation

Zones of Regulation is a conceptual framework used to teach students self regulation and self control. The curriculum teaches students to identify and communicate how they are feeling. Our teachers utilize this framework in their everyday teaching to help students learn coping strategies and ways to move into the Green zone.

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports)

Our school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) system focuses on three primary behavioral expectations that connect to our school’s core values:

I am a hard worker. (RIGOR)

I am a problem solver. (RELEVANCE)

I am a good friend. (RELATIONSHIPS)

Our three PBIS characters, the “Secret School Superheroes,” represent these three behavioral expectations.

Our School-Wide PBIS matrix shows what each behavioral expectation looks like, sounds like, and feels like in different areas of our school.
